The Haitian Children’s Fund, Inc, is a California 501(c)3, federally recognized charity, founded in 1984 as the result of Lynn Garrison’s earlier activities in Haiti. During 1980, as Producer/Director, he headed an award winning film crew, with Burt Lancaster, in an effort to create a segment on Voodoo for the star’s TV series on paranormal subjects. During that project Lynn visited all corners of the nation, meeting many Haitians, from all levels of its unique society. Like many before him, first exposure hooked him and he fell in love the the place.
Over the years, the Haitian Childern’s Fund operated with support of Lynn’s personal resources, coordinating its own activities and assisting with those of other governmental and non-governmental operations. For example, during the 2004 Hurricane Jeanne disaster, which killed over 3,000 and left countless homeless, the HCF coordinated container traffic for the Gerard Latortue government.
During each hurricane cycle the HCF has been in action. Following the 2010 eathquake the HCF supported the Mission of Hope’s massive operation to bring assistance to the victims. We provided a 16 foot box truck that was in continuous use moving material. As a result, we discovered Carolle’s living room can hold 4 40 foot containers of medical supplies.
The Haitian Children’s Fund also has a mirror society registered with Haiti’s Ministere des Affaires Sociales et du Travail (MAST) and this is a member of HAITIONE a group of Haitian ONGs, created by Mission of Hope, dedicated to helping Haiti.
Our basic focus is on children, and their needs. This flows over into community requirements to assist our young friends.Haitian kids are determined to go to school. In our area there are numbers of kids – one I know of is 12 – living outside, subsisting on hand-outs, and small jobs, while attending school. Surprisingly, these homeless kids, alone and fighting for their very existence, are getting good marks in class. They know that Education is the only ticket for their escape from poverty.
